Creative Musings
The thought for today is HAIR. I know, a bit odd, but stay with me and I’ll tell you a little about how I got there.
I’ve had a short hairstyle for about the last 3 years. I’ve loved it. However, with all of the family that has been happening lately, I’ve let it grow simply because I haven’t had time to make an appointment and have it cut.
As I was drying my hair this morning, it occurred to me that great digitized patterns are a lot like long hair. How so? Because you can do so many different things with them!
Take Donna Kleinke's latest set, Forget Me Knot. A friend of mine called me to make sure I’d seen it (Thanks Karen!). I hadn’t, so I went to Donna’s website to look (www.onesongneedlearts.com). As soon as I saw it, I had to have the entire set. So many patterns, and so much inspiration!! An amazing bargain as well.
I’m always looking for ways to use patterns in ways the designer didn’t intend. Let's face it - you've paid for these patterns, you might as well use them to their fullest potential. I’m also always looking for ways to create fabulous quilting that is affordable for my clients and makes sense time wise for me.
I used the Forget Me Knot Border A pattern. I’ve added 3 repeats and 5 rows to create a pantograph. I alternated rows 2 and 4 and trimmed off the excess. See how it created a really nice secondary pattern? I’ll use this as the center of a quilt, and choose another coordinating border pattern from the set to do the outer borders. Quick, efficient and looks great!
Here’s a black and white layout so you can see exactly what I did. You can see the completed quilts in my Gallery under "Client Quilts". They are named GO Red/White Toile and KJ Memory Quilt. Both quilts were a bit busy so this pattern added great heirloom style texture and allowed me to finish both quilts in a reasonable amount of time.
Happy Quilting!
Julie
