New Year 2010

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other. -Abraham Lincoln

Thought I'd share a quick quote from an amazing man....  Makes you think, yes?  What will each of us succeed in during 2010??

It's January 2nd, and I'm doing the thing that I've always done when the calendar rolls past New Year's Day.  After the holiday company leaves, I get out of bed before the rest of my family, and I start cleaning my studio.  I rearrange and make plans for what I want to do in the New Year.  I don't always get to do it, but I sure make some great plans!

I went through my UFO closet again this morning.  In the past, I've de-assembled the 'kits' that I've compiled for projects I thought I really wanted to do at some point.  This time, I didn't de-assemble as much as I have in the past.  I think that must be a good sign.  I'm taking more time deciding what to do in the first place, and I'm still in love with the things I started in the last few months.  I still have several block swap sets that are calling my name, and my Jane quilt isn't even off the ground yet....  How many UFO's does everyone else have?

As part of my commitment to succeed in 2010, I set up an area downstairs where I can piece quilts without having to be away from my family (my studio is upstairs).  We have a secretary type desk in our bedroom, which happens to be just off the living room.  If I don't mind ironing in the master bathroom, it works like a dream.... The big plus to all of this is that 1) we weren't using the secretary anyway, 2) the drawers and cubby holes were completely empty and so ready for sewing notions, and 3) now I can piece virtually anytime!

I was also able to acquire the best little white featherweight a few weeks ago (how lucky was that??).  She's in great shape and has a perfect stitch.  I love her already. She fits perfectly in the secretary and still leaves room for a project.  See the photo below.  Isn't she sweet?

My daughter has been piecing a small quilt made out of a charm pack. She sits in my lap, and we laugh a lot. I ironed and helped her with the borders.  Tommorrow, I'm going to load it for her and disconnect the belts on one of the Gammills and let her quilt it.  It'll be a blast.  She's been practicing on paper all day so she can quilt it just right.  I can't imagine anything she does will be wrong as long as she's enjoying the process.  If you have the opportunity to give the gift of sewing to a child, I hope you take it.  It's one of those things that truly warms one's heart.

With that, I’m off to the next task.  Hoping everyone has a happy and successful New Year!
