BIG Borders!

Creative Musings

I saw a question recently posted on a group regarding what to do with a 15" border.  I love wider borders on quilts because it really gives me, as the quilter, an opportunity to display what's possible with Creative Studio.

I have a wonderful client who brings me fun quilts to do all the time.  She and I have the same taste in patterns and fabric and I've really enjoyed working on her projects.  She is really enjoying having the opportunity to finish some things that have been in her UFO closet for quite some time.

Last summer, she brought a wonderful red and blue lone star that she'd started years ago.  As she was finishing it now, she decided she'd like to put it on one of her beds.  To make it fit, the top/bottom outer border was 8".  The sides were 16".  Mmm, now there's a challenge!  I wanted the outer border to look coordinated, and still fill the space appropriately.

Once again I turned to a pattern by Donna Kleinke of One Song Needle Arts (www.onesongneedlearts.com).  It's technically a pantograph, but I use it as a border more often than not.  The name of the pattern is Acanthus Panto 1.  I firmly believe that since I paid for the pattern, I might as use it as many ways as possible.

I used Creative Studio to measure the width of my top border.  I used repeat blocks to drop the correct number of repeats on my CAD screen.  Then started to play.  I flipped half the repeats horizontally, so they faced each other.  This became the top and bottom borders.  Here's a layout of how it looks:

Now for those pesky side borders.  Mmm, they are exactly twice the width of the top/bottom.....

So, I used Creative Studio to measure the width of my side border (and yes, I flip all my quilts so I can see the entire border at one time!).  I used repeat blocks to drop the correct number of repeats on my CAD screen.  Again, I flipped half the repeats horizontally, so they faced each other.  Then added another little twist.  I selected the entire border, rubber stamped it, and then flipped the copy vertically. This became the side borders.  Here's a layout of how they looked:

I hope this inspires you.  Creative Studio is such an amazing product, and we are only limited by our own imaginations.

Hugs!
